MINNEAPOLIS — Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter was sound asleep in his off-campus apartment one morning last summer when his cell phone buzzed to life. Like most college students, he’s used to waking up to the dulcet tones of his iPhone, but this jingle was different.
It wasn’t his alarm at all. It was a text message. Before he even read it, he knew he was late.
The text was from Damin Altizer — a University of Virginia alum who has been a personal trainer to a long list of UVa basketball players, including London Perrantes and Devon Hall.
It read “Lottery picks don’t sleep in and miss workouts.”
Hunter got the message.
Since then, he hasn’t missed an opportunity to work with Altizer at St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville.
“Whenever he’s in town and we can get a workout in, we do it,” Hunter said. “We work on everything. He really details his workouts to individual players, so it’s something different every time.”
